Avian Gantries
Steel, Sculpted Cast Metals, Cedar Wood, 2024
Avian Gantries celebrates the history of the Del Rio Trail, while providing habitat for Sacramento’s urban birds. The steel structures reference historical railway gantries and attach directly to the existing tracks; reusing and transforming the rails’ function while referencing their history.
With a goal to reimagine urban infrastructure and support both humans and the surrounding urban ecology, Avian Gantries integrates nesting boxes that provide refuge to urban birds. Experiencing wildlife in cities raises public awareness and fosters stewardship policies.
Avian nesting is seasonal and may be inconsistent; the mere presence of nesting boxes incorporated within the artwork is intended to challenge one’s assumptions on what art can do in our everyday lives.
